5 Common Mistakes to Avoid when Building a Home

Building a new house in Dallas/Fort Worth – or anywhere! – can be stressful! You think you’ve thought everything out, and then after 6 months in the new home, you start to notice that maybe you should have done a few things differently. These mishaps are common, but NewBuildDFW has a few tips for you to help avoid second guessing the decision later!

  • Take time to plan the storage for your needs: Closets are a big part of this. If you live up north, then you certainly need a coat closet near the main entry, but if you live down south, this may be less practical for your needs. Maybe eliminate this space and repurpose that space for a mudroom with organization that would better suit your family’s needs. Think through each storage space in the home and make sure it’s maximized to YOUR needs.
  • Consider your stage of life: Do you plan to have this home long term or short term? Is mobility for the golden years of retirement an issue? Or are you going to have a young family in the Dallas new construction home? Considering your life stage can help you determine whether you need stairs vs. none, if there are safety features you need to include, and more.
  • Maximize underutilized rooms: Want a gameroom? Or think a home gym is perfect? How about a media room? These rooms are great, but consider making these underutilized spaces multipurpose and transitional, so that they can be used for multiple purposes and evolve as your family evolves.
  • Light it up! You can truly never have too much light in a home, so make sure you are getting plenty of natural light throughout the home, and that you have ample interior lighting to compensate for any dark areas. Also consider the direction the home will face and which rooms will be brightest/darkest throughout the day.
  • Keep the Bedroom a Sanctuary: Ideally, your bedroom should remain a place of peace and quiet, so make sure the master bedroom – and all bedrooms if possible – are removed from the main living spaces. In a one story home, you’d want the master bedroom to be the furthest from the central areas of the home.
