Most who know anything about home real estate know that buyers want kitchens outfitted with stainless steel and granite, open concept homes, and a workable floor plan. But what else tops today’s home buyers’ lists?
The National Association of Home Builders and PulteGroup set out to answer that question when they conducted a survey of buyers nationwide. Here’s what they found!
- Laundry Rooms with Flair: Laundry rooms have come a long way since their humble beginnings. No longer is it just a swept away place for a washer and dryer; laundry rooms are now a centralized hub. A hub for doing laundry, but also folding and ironing – maybe even crafting and bill paying. Not only do North Texas buyers want the space to be functional, but they want it to be as pretty as the rest of the home. This means decorator touches, upgraded appliances and cabinets, built-ins, etc. Many also have adjacent mudrooms for all the stuff that comes in and out of the home daily.
- Walk-in closets: Storage. Storage. Storage. Dallas buyers want storage, and no surprise, they want a lot of it – particularly in the master bedroom. 31% of buyers surveyed said they’d gladly sacrifice something else within the home if they could get his and hers closets in the master. More storage = happy families.
- Higher Ceiling Height: In line with buyers wanted open concept homes, buyers want to add more of that airy feel to their home by requesting 9-10 ft. tall ceilings on the first floor of the home. It’s a custom home look, common in many Dallas-Fort Worth new construction homes today. Another interesting find on ceiling height? Cathedral-style, soaring ceilings in the family room are out. Buyers want a cozy family room feel and don’t like paying to heat and cool such an open space.
- Energy Efficiency is a Must: Not only do today’s new home buyers want beautiful houses, but they want a home that is efficient and good for the environment. Many builders today have really embraced this and are putting a plethora of green choices within their new construction home packages.
